The 2nd Thai Nguyen International Conference on Climate Change

“A Sustainable Future: Smart Use of Waste and Energy” To promote scientific initiatives and strengthen international cooperation in climate change response, on October 14th, 2025, Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) solemnly organized the 2nd Thai Nguyen International Conference on Climate Change, with the theme “A Sustainable Future: Smart Use of Waste and Energy.”

The conference was attended by Ms. Frauke Peters-Barisic – Country Director of Bread for the World in Vietnam and Laos; Ms. Pham Thi Phuong Lan – Program Coordinator/Deputy Country Director of Bread for the World in Vietnam and Laos; Dr. Nguyen Quang Tan – Country Coordinator of the World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) in Vietnam; Dr. Mercedita Agcaoili Sombilla – Director of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA); Dr. Silke Maria Stöber – Deputy Director for Research, Center for International Cooperation on Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (SLE), Humboldt University of Berlin, Germany; Dr. Ho Dac Thai Hoang – President of the Union of Science and Technology Associations of Hue City; Dr. Nguyen Hong Lien – Vice President of Thai Nguyen University; Dr. Nguyen Chi Hieu – Secretary of the Party Committee; Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hung – Chairman of the University Council; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hung Quang – Rector of TUAF.

More than 120 participants, including international scientists, representatives of universities, research organizations, government agencies, enterprises, and students, also took part in the event.

The conference served as an important platform for scientists, policymakers, enterprises, organizations, and communities to exchange academic ideas, share experiences, and present new research and technological solutions in waste management, renewable energy, and sustainable development toward a greener and more resilient future.

This annual event is part of the project “Learning Center on Carbon Neutrality and Climate Resilience in Northern Vietnam” (LEARN-VN), funded by Bread for the World and jointly implemented by TUAF, Thai Nguyen University, ICRAF Vietnam, and the Institute of Forestry and Sustainable Development.

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hung Quang – Rector of TUAF, emphasized:

“Climate change is no longer a story of the future—it is a present challenge. As a leading institution in agriculture, forestry, and environmental research, TUAF is committed to working with the scientific community and stakeholders to build a sustainable, green, and clean future. The university is proud to serve as a green knowledge hub in the Northern Midland and Mountainous region, training high-quality human resources, conducting research, and transferring technologies for sustainable agricultural and forestry development.”

He also highlighted the establishment of the Climate Park at TUAF — a “living laboratory” where models of forest restoration, agroforestry, renewable energy, and circular agriculture are implemented, bringing together students, scientists, and communities in practical learning and innovation.

The conference featured keynote presentations and thematic sessions, including:

  • Keynote Presentation: Development of Bioenergy in Vietnam;

  • *Introduction of the LEARN-VN Project;

  • Interactive Session: Voices from the Community – featuring videos, livestreams, and local stories on climate resilience and sustainable action.

Several side events were also held, such as:

  • Panel Discussion: Bridging the Gap and Building Solutions – Enabling Community-Led Climate Action;

  • Field Visit: Tour and Q&A at the TUAF Climate Park Demonstration Sites;

  • Workshop: Financing for Social Impact;

  • Open Forum: Emerging Issues and Opportunities for Collaboration;

  • Academic Session: Smart Waste and Energy Management in the Circular Economy – Global Science, Local Transition;

  • International Partnership Dialogue: From Research to Action – Joint Pathways Toward Circular and Sustainable Landscapes.

Delegates engaged in in-depth discussions and co-creation of solutions for sustainable transformation, while listening to local community representatives share their challenges and initiatives. The conference effectively connected science with practice, promoting innovation and collaboration for a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

At the conclusion, participants collectively reaffirmed their commitment to environmental action, particularly in waste management and sustainable energy development, contributing to the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
