The initial name of the University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF) was the Mountainous Technical University established in 1969. In 1971, the University was renamed as the Mountainous University of Agriculture and Forestry. In 1972, the University was renamed to Agricultural University III. In 1994, Thai Nguyen University was established and the Agricultural University III has become a member of TNU with the currently used name of Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF). Over 55 years of building and developing orientations, the University has 7 specialized faculties and an office that administers the Advanced Educational Programs (AEP), 7 functional departments to serve the training programs, 3 research institutes, and 11 centers.
In 2025, the University has 25 educational training programs for undergraduates, 11 master’s and 8 doctoral programs. Up to present, there have been 52 academic courses in which learners successfully graduated from university with more than 50.000 learners holding bachelor of engineering and bachelor, nearly 4.000 masters and doctoral learners. In recent years, the University has been always evaluated as the leading center of educational training and science and technology transferring in the fields of agriculture, forestry, natural resources, and environment management for the midland and northern mountainous areas in the country. Forty percent (40%) of the learners are ethnic people coming from mountainous, remote, and extremely poor areas in the north of Vietnam.
