Theme "Healthy Soils for Sustainable Development" of the international ESAFS 2024 conference
With the theme "Healthy Soils for Sustainable Development", the conference attracted outstanding experts, researchers, and scholars in soil science from countries: Canada, China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Poland, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bangladesh, Indonesia ,etc. and Vietnam have contributed to promoting sustainable development in the region through healthy soils in agriculture, sustainable development and environment.
The 16th International Conference of the East and Southeast Asia Federation of Soil Science Societies (ESAFS 2024) was organized for the first time in Vietnam. Previously, the Conference was successfully held every 2 years, in Bangkok - Thailand (2017), Taipei - Taiwan (2019) and Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia (2022).

On behalf of the leadership of Thai Nguyen University, Assoc.Prof.Hoang Van Hung warmly welcomed the delegates to attend the 16th International Conference of the Federation of East and Southeast Asian Soil Science Societies (ESAFS 2024) with the theme " Healthy Soils for Sustainable Development " organized at Thai Nguyen University in collaboration with the Vietnam Soil Science Society (VSSS), East and Southeast Asia Federation of Soil Science Societies (ESAFS), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

The ESAFS 2024 conference aims to share invaluable experience and knowledge among soil scientists all over the World, especially in East and Southeast Asia countries, promote active participation of member societies and networking and contribute towards sustainable development in the region through harmonization of agriculture and environment. The speakers and delegates attending the conference were divided into groups to present and discuss at 6 Symposium topics (Sessions) as follows.
- Soil health; Soil ecology and Biodiversity
- Soil fertility and Plant nutritions
- Soil classification and mapping; Soil evaluation and land use; Information on upland soils; Serpentine soils and Wetland
- Mitigation and C-Sequestration in soil-plant system; Land use to respond to climate change and sea level rise
- Soil poluttion; Soil degradation and remediation; Recent advances in soil research
- Land governance; Land policy and Education on land management
International keynote speakers presented at the conference
The international ESAFS 2024 conference is part of a series of events celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of Thai Nguyen University (TNU). This is an opportunity for scientists to share experiences and knowledge about soil around the world, especially in countries in East and Southeast Asia, contributing to sustainable development in the region through harmony between agriculture and the environment.
Participating in the conference were representatives from 12 Soil Science Societies in ESAFS member countries and more than 330 domestic and international delegates. Including 90 international delegates from 20 countries and territories, over 240 Vietnamese delegates are scientists at research institutes, universities, organizations and units in nation and abroad. In particular, there were 12 delegations from the Soil and Fertilizer Science Associations from East and Southeast Asian countries. The ESAFS 2024 conference invited 6 keynote speakers, 75 oral presentations and 70 poster presentations. The international conference has tot 12 oral presentation sessions, including 6 topics synthesized topics from 15 conference topics, 1 in-educational tour program during the conference, 1 post-tour program after the conference. The topics of the conference discuss soil health, soil relations, climate, plant and human life. The presentations aim to address pollution prevention, land environmental degradation, responding to climate change, carbon fixation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions towards sustainable regional and global development. Enhance the position and contribution of Vietnamese soil science in the region and internationally.

Selecting a location to organize the 17th ESAFS conference (ESAFS 2027). The next ESAFS will be held in 2027. Prof. Keshav Raj Adhikari, President of the Nepalese Society of Soil Science (NSSS) presented the host country's preparations and NSSS's willingness to host the 17th ESAFS in 2027. Nepal was then selected and approved as the host for the 17th ESAFS conference.
